Role Summary:

Introduces new responsibilities and opportunities to the barista role and requires hard work and dedication to fulfill our commitment to customers. Shift Leaders demonstrate outstanding hospitality skills through the execution of high-quality beverages, customer engagement, excellent product knowledge and superior barista skills. Shift Leaders supervise staff and set a superior leadership example for fellow employees by following all policies and procedures. Shift Leaders assist the Café Manager with all aspects of the coffee bar’s operations by showing initiative and taking ownership of all areas of the café, ensuring Reserva Coffee Roasters’ standard of cleanliness and hospitality are met.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Fosters teaming concepts and servant leadership standards

Oversee proper training of café personnel

Work to strengthen team members knowledge of Reserva Coffee Roasters brand

Train new hires in Reserva Coffee Roasters barista concepts

Teach professional brewing techniques including extraction, pour over, milk steaming, and latte art

Promotes and practices safe work habits, identifies and resolves workplace hazards and documents any incidents or accidents at the store

Be “on-call” to cover shifts for no-call/no-shows, handle emergencies, customer issues

Maintain high quality and consistent product standards

Maintain a clean, organized and well-stocked environment both behind the counter, in storage spaces, and customer areas and when necessary report anything broken, missing, out of stock, etc.

Cup and taste coffee and tea regularly to maintain familiarity with product and quality standards

Stay informed of new coffee availability and attributes

Act as a key player in the café’s effort to provide amazing customer experiences

Successful completion of daily and long-term checklists, meeting work quality standards set by Café Manager

Maintain knowledge of new coffees, seasonal items and retail promotions

Communicate important updates to Café Manager, Senior Baristas and Baristas during shift changes

Perform key-hold responsibilities and follow alarm/security procedures

Make decisions and solve problems while aiming to avoid wasting money or incurring unnecessary costs

Uphold the company’s standards regarding merchandising, inventory and rotation of store products

Responsible for the opening and/or closing of the café and all associate protocols

Coordinate all communication with Café Manager

Coach, mentor, and actively train staff as necessary

Ensure adherence to the company’s dress code, as well as all health and safety requirements

Prepare and serve coffee and tea beverages that adhere to company's freshness and quality standards ensuring that they consistently reflect the company's recipe and presentation standards

Maintain coffee knowledge on current offerings and confidently and accurately communicate product information to customers

Actively participate in coffee and tea tastings to further product knowledge and help identify any issues or deficiencies

Educate customers and staff on all coffee and teas carried

Ensure customers are warmly received and welcomed; engage the customer in a sincere and friendly manner, including greeting customers with a smile, thanking them for their patronage, and preparing drinks

Respond to questions, orders and concerns with patience, confidence and professionalism

Engage customers about their drink preferences and tailor suggestions accordingly

Facilitate easy dialogue with customers regarding other product offerings, including whole bean, coffee, tea, complimentary food offerings, merchandise, as well as current promotions

Demonstrate initiative with routine tasks

Sample espresso shots when dialing in and regularly throughout the shift at Reserva Coffee Roasters to ensure quality, uphold standards, and keep developing your coffee palate

Support your team in keeping the café running smoothly and beautifully, including, washing dishes, clearing dishes, sweeping, dusting, mopping, cleaning and organizing condiment station, taking out trash, cleaning restrooms

Delegate baking and kitchen tasks as necessary

All other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED

2+ years in specialty coffee, retail, hospitality and/or customer service industries

Must be 18 years or older

Must be willing and able to commit to a minimum employment term of at least one year

Availability to work flexible hours that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, nights and/or holidays

Availability to work up to 40 hours per week when required

Ability to report to work at scheduled time every scheduled workday

Follow verbal and written instructions and adapt to change

Ability to maintain a positive attitude and productivity in times of high volume.

Maintain professionalism at all times when dealing with co-workers and guests.

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

Ability to understand and communicate in Spanish is preferred

Demonstrate a passion for coffee and tea

Capability to interface and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and customers

Logical and methodical approach to problem solving

Flexible with the ability to multi-task in a highly demanding stressful environment

Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume

Ability to lead successfully and communicate clearly, honestly and promptly

Ability to communicate effectively with others, including giving and receiving feedback on the quality of services

Ability to use available resources to answer questions

Ability to occasionally lift objects up to 50 lbs and spend long periods of time on foot

Food managers certificate required.
